Memecoin and trading glossary
Short definitions of the terms you will meet when trading new tokens, written for people who are new to it.
- Bonding curve
- A formula that sets a token's price from how much of it has been sold, used by some launch platforms before a token moves into an open pool.
- Bridge
- A route that moves value from one blockchain to another by taking funds on one chain and delivering an equivalent asset on the other.
- Bundler
- A set of linked wallets that buy a token together at launch, which can hide how concentrated the supply really is.
- Cashback
- A share of an eligible Verve spot or copy-trade fee that is returned to the trader, paid out of the fee itself.
- Copy trading
- Following a wallet and mirroring its trades from your own wallet, with the size and limits you set.
- Cross-chain cash
- Verve's planned single USD balance that can be spent on any supported chain. Not live yet.
- DEX
- A decentralised exchange: a set of smart contracts, usually liquidity pools, that lets people swap tokens without a central order book.
- Gas
- The network fee a blockchain charges to process a transaction, paid in the chain's native asset.
- Honeypot
- A token designed so that buyers cannot sell, or can only sell under conditions its creator controls.
- Liquidity
- How much of a token and its paired asset is available in a pool to trade against. Low liquidity means higher slippage.
- Liquidity pool
- A smart contract holding two assets that traders swap against, with the price set by the ratio of the two.
- Market capitalisation
- A token's price multiplied by its circulating supply. It is an estimate and says little about how much can actually be sold.
- Memecoin
- A token whose value rests mainly on community attention and culture rather than a working product.
- MEV
- Maximal extractable value: profit earned by choosing, inserting or reordering transactions in a block.
- Migration
- The move of a token from a launch curve into an open trading pool once a threshold is reached. Also called graduation.
- Native asset
- The coin a blockchain uses to pay network fees, such as SOL on Solana or ETH on Ethereum.
- Non-custodial wallet
- A wallet whose keys are controlled by the user, so nobody else can move the funds without the user's authorisation.
- Passkey
- A phishing-resistant sign-in credential stored on your device, usable in place of a password or emailed code.
- Price impact
- The change in price caused by your own trade, which grows with trade size relative to liquidity.
- Private key
- The secret that authorises spending from a wallet. Anyone who has it controls the wallet.
- Pulse
- Verve's live feed of new tokens in three columns: New Pairs, Final Stretch and Migrated.
- Sandwich attack
- A form of MEV where an attacker trades just before and just after your order so that it fills at a worse price.
- Slippage
- The difference between the expected price of a trade and the price it actually fills at.
- Slippage tolerance
- The worst price, as a percentage, you accept before a trade is rejected instead of filling.
- Sniper
- A wallet that buys a token within moments of launch, often to sell into later buyers.
- Spot swap
- An immediate exchange of one token for another at the current market price.
- Stablecoin
- A token designed to track the value of a currency such as the US dollar.
- Token page
- The Verve page for one token, with chart, trades, holders, safety signals and a buy panel.
