What is a memecoin?
A memecoin is a crypto token that draws its value mainly from attention, community and culture rather than from a working product or cash flow. Anyone can create one in minutes, which is why there are so many and why most do not last.

The short definition
A memecoin is a token on a public blockchain, usually created from a standard token template, that is built around a joke, a character, a theme or a trend. Its price is set by what buyers and sellers are willing to pay at the moment, and that willingness depends heavily on social attention.
Unlike a share in a company or a token tied to a protocol with fees, most memecoins promise nothing. That makes them simple to understand and easy to price badly.
Why memecoins move so fast
- Supply is cheap to create, so new tokens appear constantly and compete for the same attention.
- Liquidity is often thin. A small buy or sell can move the price a lot, which is why slippage matters.
- Early holders can be concentrated in a few wallets, so a handful of sells can reverse a rally.
- Attention moves between tokens quickly, so a feed of new launches is only useful if you can also check what you are looking at.
How new memecoins get launched
Some tokens start with a fixed pricing curve on a launch platform and later migrate into an open trading pool; others are launched directly into a pool. Verve's Pulse feed groups tokens into New Pairs, Final Stretch and Migrated so you can tell these stages apart. See what a bonding curve is for the detail.
The risks, stated plainly
- Total loss is a normal outcome, not a rare one. Only use money you can afford to lose.
- Some tokens are built to trap buyers, for example honeypots that block selling. Safety checks reduce this risk but cannot remove it.
- Prices can be pushed by coordinated wallets, and information on social media can be wrong or paid for.
- You are responsible for your own decisions. Trading digital assets, and new tokens in particular, involves substantial risk, including total loss. Nothing here is financial advice.
Researching memecoins on Verve
Verve is a multichain terminal for Solana, BNB Chain, Ethereum, Base, Robinhood Chain, Monad, TON, Arc and HyperEVM. Pulse streams new tokens, Discover ranks trending ones, and each token page shows holder and safety signals before you decide.
Is a memecoin the same as any other token?
Technically yes: it is a token on a blockchain. What differs is the reason people hold it. A memecoin's value rests mostly on community attention rather than a product.
Can a memecoin go to zero?
Yes. Many new tokens lose nearly all their value, and some become impossible to sell. Treat every purchase as something you could lose entirely.
Which chains have memecoins?
Memecoins exist on many chains. Verve supports Solana, BNB Chain, Ethereum, Base, Robinhood Chain, Monad, TON, Arc and HyperEVM.
